Salford's Health Investment for Tomorrow

5 Projects that are changing the face of health services in Salford

Redevelopment & Modernisation

This project is an important feature of the SHIFT Programme as although the remit is in part to move services out of the hospital into community settings, the need for hospital-based care will continue and become more complex as medicine and technology develop.

The poor state of parts of the hospital site does not meet the needs of the patients served by the Trust. The Victorian ward-blocks in the centre of the hospital site will be demolished and replaced.

The design principle adopted is to improve public access and way finding routes. It is anticipated that this will benefit patients and visitors to the site to more easily orientate themselves.

The value of the entire scheme is £190m, made up through a combination of PFI and Public Capital. The PFI scheme is valued at £134m and the Public Capital is £56m. The elements of the public capital work are closely linked with the major PFI buildings, and as a result the Public Capital Works span the whole of the PFI time frame. The scheme started with minor enabling works in autumn 2006 and will be fully delivered in 2012.
